WEBELOS WOODS 2010!!

Our second annual Webelos Woods event was a great success, with good reports coming back to us from other Packs. Our scouts are now experienced in the setting up and management of these events, so the adults were able to meet with potential new scouts while the current scouts ran the events. Awesome job, scouts!

Zach's Star Service Project

A few weeks ago, the troop met up at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church and finished replacing the landscaping borders for Zach's service project. Half the work was done earlier in the year for Matt's service project.

Justin and Stewart help transport the wood by balancing the trailer.

The work begins....

Mr. Redmond takes the liberty to help out

Daniel tackles three boards by himself and....

Proves completely successful!

LUNCHTIME!

I think we all hated that gravel.

Done with the gravel!!

Finished right on schedule around three!

Check out our finished product at Andrew Divjak's service project on 10-23-10!!

MUD CAVES CANCELED AND RESCHEDULED

We are sorry to report that due to a lack of adult chaperones the Mud Caves campout is canceled for this weekend. We thank Mr. Wright and Mr Adams for coming forward and being willing to chaperone, but we were still short for the 3 that are required for outings so we had to cancel.

The good news is:

"The Mud Caves camp out is officially rescheduled for Oct. 9-10. Your patrol leaders will be in touch with you shortly regarding planning."

kayaking on Mission Bay

The boys are at it again! The troop spent its first activity after the summer on the calm waters of mission bay. The kayaks were rented from Fiesta Island; the boys got not only kayaks, but a small sailboat! Yay :)! They spent a good two hours on the water, well most of them anyway. Daniel and Stewart got stuck with trying to sail the sailboat upwind to the docking area, and had to be rescued by the hero of the day, Andy Adams; they had to push it back all the way, ha! The sailboat not only caused Daniel and Stewart trouble but Mrs. Redmond got a little wet too when Jordan jumped overboard after trying to ram some kayaks.

Hello all,

I just wanted to make a quick post to announce that our troop's new Historian, Stewart Wright, has stepped up to the plate and asked to take over and update the blog! Yeah!

I will continue updating upcoming events, Ebay sales, and overseeing it, but Stewart will now upload pics of events, make comments and keep us all posted.

Top Scores!

100 pts to Mrs Gamble for dry bags and sleeping pads and for stocking up her son with all that chocolate, which has been graciously shared with our little Troop and has become quite a fundraising opportunity in itself.

100 pts to Mrs Chung for preparing those INCREDIBLE gourmet bagel BLTs with roast beef and avocados, accompanied by chips and puffs and grapes and cherries and starbucks coffees and more!! woo hoo! I wish I could have enjoyed it longer (if u know what I mean...HA!)

100 pts to Mr Gamble for being such an encourager and mentor to both leaders and boys, for giving so much of your time and seemingly ever-flowing energy to those around you, for spending this past year investing in Emerald Bay Conservationist Ryan and his water meter project (he shared his gratitude for how you had helped him with me on our drive back to camp), and finally for teaching me there's a way to do just about everything you want, if you ask enough people and make friends with everyone and offer something in return and smile often and NEVER GIVE UP... no matter what the rules are!

100 pts to Mr Finley for completing his Outdoor Leadership Training (and more) at great sacrifice of his free time, for knowing everything on the schedule here minute by minute, for his calm and patient counsel to these boys, and for making a great come-back at the shot gun range, scoring 7 out of 10 during Leader Shoot! YES! (I think another 100 may be coming his way after we taste his Catalina Chocolate Cherry BOMB Cobbler this afternoon...stay tuned)

100 pts to Jordan for winning that intense Belly flop Contest! woo hoo!! and for spending so much of his free time with the boys, for snagging us a picnic lunch for our extended bike ride, for sharing his chocolate stash and his chili-coated red licorice with us, and especially for sneaking that little pillow into my tent after I confessed to him that I'd been sleeping with my head on my beach towel all week.

100 pts for Ranger Joe for joining us on almost every event we've attempted, for allowing us to go in the opposite direction of the crowd in order to find that private beach, for leading us in kayaking, bike riding and every other event under the not-so-sunny skies here!!! GO RANGER JOE! You da MAN!

100 pts to Matt for handling his sudden rise to power with wisdom and patience and courage, for preventing a mutiny on War Canoe, for letting each boy make his own mistakes, for holding them to their responsibilities, for compromising on the Aquacade positions so the Team was united again, for playing MOM so I didn't have to, and for keeping his Adult Leaders on the sidelines at all times.

100 pts to Justin for always laughing at my jokes, for joining my silly sea chantey, for offering his own LOUD rendition of Happy Birthday (and a few more taking the consequences when all those disapproving eyes turned his way), for taking such good care of Robert the Lobster, for finding matching shorts with Palmer, and for leading the cheering section the boys provided Brian and I at the Adult Leader Shot Gun Shoot Off. "YAY!! ahhhhh! YAY!!!!! ahhhhhhh!"

100 pts to Cody for coaching those younger boys in how to lift a canoe up out of the water after class, for figuring out that the Waiters get to eat first, and seconds when the boys go thru and thirds when the call for "SECONDS!!" goes out, for Waitering AGAIN for the 5th time (when the other boys refused to get up out of bed), for serving us first and doing a thorough and selfless job of it, and for SLAMMING past that guy in the final stretch of the Aquacade!!

100 pts to Zach for "being a rock", as Mr Finley put it, for your maturity and sense of responsibility...your cleaniness and sunscreen use could improve (but that's the momma coming out again), for taking it in stride when your "turtling" turned into "barrel rolling" and when getting into that kayak turned into "turtling"...and for pushing past your "finished" point to come back and unite the team in the Aquacade!
100 pts to Palmer for being such a great sport about EVERYTHING! for being willing to do ANY thing and really applying yourself to everything, for pulling the boys together and lightening the stress with your humor, and especially for giving up the use of your arms and posing as a penguin over and over again!! You da BEST!!

Adventure Calls

Can't u just feel the longing for more adventure?

Oh the stories these shoes could tell... of the icy waters of that blasted swim test... and how they could have jumped up and kicked me in the mouth if they weren't securely on my feet after an hour of that incessant sea chantey on War Canoe... of that foggy sunset and peaceful silence on our lovely evening kayak trip out past Indian Head Rock... of the clear waters of Doctor's Cove (where we had our private beach bbq) when Jordan so courageously took me snorkeling (he probably wishes he hadn't had THAT brilliant idea!)...

I just can't imagine having a better week away from home. I am missing my beloved hubby and other kiddos, but these shoes... don't they look like they just might run off into the hills of Emerald Bay Island and find a spot to watch and wait for the next mommy adventurer to stumble off that ferry having no clue how much fun is in store for her!

A COUPLE MORE...

And after masterfully executing the Flying Squirrel and stealing the show w an applause that rocked the island, he gives a victory pose!

Palmer tries to make a "floatie" out of a pair of jeans...

Just a bit more air and it will work!

In goes the sand filled bottle, down to the bottom of the bay...

And in jumps Justin to retrieve it from the bottom of the bay!

Ranger Joe and his Buddy had to go dumpster diving to recover a tossed snorkel...yuck, the things you'll do for a Scout!

Matt gets the Second Hand Lions Talk from Commissioner Bruce, who has personally donated many of his own historical items to the Emerald Bay Staff Auction, Young Two Stripes included.

Preparing Mr Finleys Famous Catalina Chocolate Cherry BOMB for the Cobbler Cookoff!!

Ahhhh, the finished entry drizzled in chocolate for the final irresistible touch.

He didn't know just how dirty cobbler prep is!

Ranger Joe poses as Aquaman at the opening of Aquacade!

The next sequence of sand castle pics are out of order.

Palmer makes sure it looks like his dad...

Everyone is involved in the planning and placement and arguing...

Palmer n Zach work on the Sphynx

Matt n Cody perfect the Pyramid

Cody n Zach supply the sand for the opening contest, Sand Sculptures - These pics are backwards!

Justin was the professional sculpture of the bunch, and they all pose w their finished masterpiece!
Jordan bravely steps in as Acting Scoutmaster for the belly flop contest... and really got into character!

Message to Garcia...Matt n Palmer get a message to carry by canoe to....

to Zach in a kayak....

Who carries it to Justin, who swims it over to.....

Cody, who runs it into camp and back to narrowly beat that guy!!! GO TEAM!!

Palmer and dad practice the penguin, but can't keep a straight face...

Now THAT looks sharp!

The Catalina Cherry Tree is not only native to the Island, but also exclusive to the island. The Catalina Cherry is a favorite of local foxes, tho w its large pit and thin layer of meat, its not too popular w humans. Rumor has it the bitter tasting fruit may send ur bowels into overdrive.

In spite of this infamous reputation, Mr Palmer has chosen the name for his special dutch oven cobler entry in Fridays contest.

B watching the blog for photos and the results!
