PCT Hike This Weekend

This is the back packing list for Pacific Crest Trail Hike.
    • Knife
    • Extra clothing, 2 shirts (your class B's are perfect), 1 pair of shorts and 1 pair of long pants should be good. A nice jacket and you should be good. Avoid cotton.
    • SOCKS. Always bring one more pair than you will need, 3 pairs is good. These should be wool and thick to help protect from blisters, as well as just for comfort. (Note to the scouts: The thick hiking socks may be uncomfortable to start, but once you get hiking, the slight extra padding and the protection is amazing.) ... I'll stop ranting about socks now =)
    • Hiking boots. Preferably not sneakers, definitely not sandals.
    • Flashlight
    • Rain gear, light waterproof jacket, and waterproof pans are good, ponchos are not advised
    • Water Bottle, each scout should have about 2 liters, I generally bring two 32 ounce Nalgene's
    • Bowl, Cup, Fork, Spoon
    • Map and Compass
    • Sun protection, hat, sun glasses, sunscreen
    • Knit Cap for sleeping
    • Trail food
    • Sleeping bag
    • Sleeping pad
    • Advancement card
    •  Pencil/pen
    • Note book (optional)
    • Personal cleaning equipment, choose what you want to bring, some scouts like to brush their teeth, some don't mind going 2 days without. I do recommend a small roll of TP.

Big Bear Snow Campout and Ski Trip

    Big Bear Snow Camp Out

Picking up everyone and packing the cars.  We drove the expanse between the Well and Big Bear Mountain.  We finally set up camp after a four hour drive.  Sorry that no other pictures were taken, the camera ran out of batteries. Everyone had a great time skiing and snowboarding; there was some serious competition between them. The Pigotts left Saturday night while the rest of the group slept and packed in the morning.  Thank you to the adults for their help, planning, and providing learning experiences.

    CEDAR CREEK FALLS HIKE

We started the hike around 9am.  Trail was in good condition.  Lots of switchbacks.  We made it down to the falls around 11am.  Beautiful clear pool at the base of the falls.   Corey and Kyler hiked to the top of the falls while Jordan swam in the pool and found a rope swing on the other side of the pool.  We had a nice lunch together.

Hike out nice.  Winds were high.  Santa Anna - Beautiful blue sky.  Lots of green growth from December rains.

Back to trailhead by 12:30pm                Good hike.

BLACKSMITH DAY!!  WOW!  A few burns, okay, alot of burns, but still a great day!  Lots of iron shapes came home, some even recognizable, and that means more Christmas presents!  They were there the whole day and really got to see how difficult the work of blacksmithing is..... One scout said, "It was so hard because I would pound and pound on this hot iron and then it would just suddenly fold over and break."  Apparently, it takes a lot of experience to know when the metal gets thin enough to hold its shape, but not so thin that it breaks.  I think they all gained some appreciation of the art of blacksmithing.  How are all those burns coming along?  :)
